Nowadays, the religious aspect has mostly been forgotten, and it has become simply an opportunity to show our mothers how much we love and appreciate them. The day might start with children preparing a breakfast tray to bring their mum breakfast in bed, with a homemade card and some flowers. No matter if the toast is burnt or the tea is cold: it is the thought and the effort that counts. Grown up children might take their mother out for a celebratory lunch. But however it is marked, woe betide any child who doesn’t call to say “Happy Mother’s Day – thank you mum!”.
